This project was one of many involved in the completion of the North Shore Connector, extending the Pittsburgh T from downtown to the North Shore. It included construction of a cut and cover tunnel, as well as the station shell for the new Gateway Station. The heavy construction work involved removal, relocation, support and replacement of utilities; shoring of the excavated cut and cover tunnel and station; monitoring of the buildings adjacent to the alignment; controlled fill; maintenance and protection of traffic; and replacement of sidewalks and streets.

This project also included the partial demolition of the existing subway station, but allowed for restoration of the Bearden Mural located on the existing tunnel wall.
